It could be slightly salty for some people, but I think it’s well-balanced. In addition to the recurring hard boiled egg, we also got some spicy greens (arugula perhaps?), sweet briny black olive pieces, salty capers, crunchy tangy pickles, crumbly feta cheese for bite, and finally a nice serving of creamy garlic aioli. It was filling and complex, not to mention wonderfully delicious. The ones for the Scuttlebutt supposedly change based on the season, but you can expect a hodgepodge of flavors and textures. They could put a bunch of dirty seaweed inside and the bread would bring it to life, I’m sure.īut the fillings are much fresher and well-thought out than sea scraps. I can’t begin to tell you how perfect the bread here is. And in true Saltie fashion, a hint of sea salt on top separates this bread from all the other impostors out there. It featured Saltie’s famous chewy foccacia bread with a wonderful brown outer crust and a chewy soft center. The Scuttlebutt was another major sandwich. And I was excited about being forced to try new items, although I did also order that old standby and it was delicious as usual. Could it have more to do with the slangy use of the word, meaning “gossip, or rumor”?Įither way, scuttlebutt is a funny sounding name and whether or not it makes sense with these particular ingredients, it ended up on Time Out’s list and so I made my way back to Saltie on a Saturday afternoon for some high sea sandwiches. I had stumbled in here last year and absolutely fell in love with The Captain’s Daughter, which even made my own Top 100. Aside from the fact that the food and café have a nautical theme, I can’t quite figure out why the girls at Saltie in Williamsburg used the term scuttlebutt to name one of their amzing sandwiches. In no particular order, here’s my take on their Top 100.Īccording to Wikipedia, a scuttlebutt is a cask used for dispensing drinking water in a nautical setting. And no price point or subway delay will stop me. Tiny shops with big personalities are some of my favorites and this one has definitely become one of mine in the area.Once again Time Out New York released their Top 100 Dishes of the year and once again, I’m going to eat my way through every one. They do have paper menus but it's not the most organized way of displaying what you can order. Right now it literally just lists names which gets daunting for people who have never been in the shop and also causes confusion and a long line of people not knowing what to order. One thing they could improve on would probably be to actually list what's in each of the sandwiches on their wall menu. At around 12 dollars each, the sandwiches don't come cheap but they're also huge which helps. Boiled eggs, beets, capers, feta cheese and olives? I actually happen to love all those things so it was a no brainer for me but I know that many would get scared looking at that list! Have trust in me when I tell you that you'll be surprised at how delicious it is. I got the scuttlebutt which as many others have said, it's amazing. It's salty, fluffy and soaks up just the right amount of sauce that they use for the sandwiches. The foccica bread that they use btw is also what MAKES the sandwich. Most of the choices include a mixture of ingredients that you wouldn't think go together but do AND you will suddenly crave capers and beets for awhile after eating here. Everything has lots of salt (which I love), I really do mean LOTS though. One of the most interesting sandwiches I've ever had. I can truly say Saltie's sandwich made me happy! I will be back next time! I handed the plate to the cashier with a smile on my face and complimented the sandwich. Top if off with their foccaccia….palette pleaser. The aioli with the potatoes and egg tasted perfect together. JEBUS…my frown turned upside down and I took a couple bites afterwards. She asked if I wanted a bite and I said sure why not….the foccaccia and other goods on display looked awesome so I did. The cashier could read my mood right on my face and I felt bad…I didn't order anything and just wanted to get out of the place…. I was a litle peaved since I was full and wanted to go to our hotel to check in since we had all our luggage….This is the backstory of how I felt at the time…. We arrived La Guardia for our food excursion weekend and we started by going to Roberta's and ordered 3 pizzas…immediately after we came to Saltie since my sister wanted to try the place.
